AntlerlandAntlerland started off yeeeears ago doing work in a sample based tracker style, more lately things have been getting a little more grandiose. Still all over the shop style wise, from heavy dub beats to Enoesque soundscapes to big dumb pop tunes, but always keeping a nice balance between rhythm, harmony and melody.Strait Outta RiverinaRising Of The Lights, released 05 December 20221. Nocturne (The Way Out)City pop, country pop, dream pop, doom pop, rock pop, techno pop. Songs about escaping and friends and escaping with friends and escaping from friends.I've found the added dimension of actual lyrics has given new impetus to my work, including finally finishing "Dreaming About You", a sketch of which I had included on Recombinant Diamond Dust back in 2010, and have now fleshed out to its full potential as a "creepy guy" ballad.I've realised a few other ideas which have percolated for years, like Hard Landing, which was a tough one to finish, considering the high concept. Although there were a few certain... dubious personages... who provided some inspiration as I was working it out.On The Breakaway, obviously, is about road cycling. I used Jens Voigt's "shut up legs" tagline and had a bit of fun throwing other cycling references in, since to my disgrace I know more about the sport than the Trojan War, which the song was originally going to be about.Others just popped out of thin air and were put together very quickly, like Frantic, which just demanded to be brought into being. Kind of think it'd make a decent Eurovision entry for Australia if I whittled it down to 3 minutes, except of course it'd be ineligible anyway.Fantastic Escape just came pretty quickly as well, although I had been poking at the concept for a while. I will admit I poured things on a bit thick with it. The guitar part comes from NI's Picked Acoustic set using the Countryside pattern. It was meant to be a placeholder but I just couldn't get rid of it.Meeting Friends In The City came out of a "listening to too much city pop" phase, people like Minako Yoshida and Haruomi Hosono, and why not pair it up with some country pop in Comfort And Pain, written very quickly. I didn't want to end the album's lyrics with a bummer like Hard Landing and that fit the bill.New Day? Yeah, that's just a dumb tune I actually sang to myself doing the dishes. I was going for an early Stereolab sound, Peng era. Except obviously it's not as good. But, hey, It's got the album title in it. Which apparently was an old time description of croup or pneumonia or something.I can't say I've ever been great at writing words which is why they've rarely turned up on my albums until now, but I've had fun with them even if I resort to cliche far too often. it makes for something a little different.I think the vocals sometimes veer into the uncanny valley (especially on Hard Landing) and I've tended to veer on the side of leaving the odd glitch in, as I do with the instrumentation. But mostly... it fits in with the rest of the Antlerland corpus, which as usual is all over the shop. It's kicked off by Prelude (The Way-Oh Song) which is an attempt to write the most obnoxious sports anthem possible, something they'd blare at the MCG at half-time in between Messages From Our Partners, and concludes with Nocturne (The Way Out), which is very pulp noir, I guess. The sort of basic tune that's undoubtedly been written a thousand times over. The set is rounded out by Circadia, which had about three different ideas layered on top of a drum machine jam, and the Ortis Cinematic Universe returns with a third installment in Ortis Grind. This missed the cut for Bear but it gave me a head start for this collection..Part of the song recurs elsewhere in the album, can you find out where?Anyway, that's another album done.
