Alexandre Mallorie grew up in the southern part of the United States. In the nineteen nineties, he traveled to Azad Kashmir. He visited Muzaffarabad and the nearby valleys. During his trip, he met with the refugees fleeing the horrors of occupation. These refugees and the people of Kashmir are the inspiration of this novel.
