In the case of April March and Aquaserge, it's to a '60s Paris brimming with style, spirit and seduction. It's a slow kiss amid the hustle and bustle of a Belleville patisserie, the final chapters of a Didion novel read crisping in the sun on the banks of the Seine, a wine-soaked night chasing shadows down the streets of Place de la Bastille. And, as the locals might say, c'est fantastique. And why wouldn't it be, with two such remarkable talents at the helm. Take one brigade of psychedelic rock specialists, cult favourites Aquaserge, who feature Tame Impala drummer Julien Barbagallo and recent Melody's Echo Chamber collaborator Benjamin Glibert, add one beguiling Californian songwriter, April March (real name Elinor Blake), whose candid yé-yé pop met international acclaim when her song ‘Chick Habit’ featured in gritty Quentin Tarantino Grindhouse thriller Death Proof, and the sparks are going to fly – let alone with one of the most creative and romantic of settings as their inspiration. A Serge Gainsbourg-indebted Parisian pop masterstroke full of haunted organ sounds, gently crunching guitars, charming harmonies and sumptuous detail, this debut collaboration was written and recorded across continents, between Blake's New Jersey apartment and the group's Vallesville barn in the French countryside (“on warm days we'd have the barn doors to the studio wide open so when I recorded my vocals it'd be to a random audience of birds and chickens,” recalls the singer). All this after Aquaserge and Blake met in 2007 while playing in – where else? - Paris. The result is a record Blake suggests sounds like “a sea voyage from France to New York then by land across the southern route of the States ending on the coast in California with percussive flashes of time travel mayhem along the way.” “I was born in New York City in 1965,” explains Blake , whose 9 album discography includes LPs called Gainsbourgsion! and Paris in April, of her Francophone fascination. “French culture was something my mother presented to me as a greener pasture when I was a little girl. The message was that even our French frying pan held something more magical than what we had in the States. Mixed in Chicago by legendary Tortoise frontman John McEntire and released via Benjamin Schoos’s Freaksville label, this is a record that will take you somewhere – to a place that after one listen you'll feel compelled to return to again and again. Français: Il y a des albums magnifiques, mais il y a aussi ceux qui, en plus de l’être, vous permettent de voyager. Dans le cas de April March et Aquaserge, il s’agit d’un voyage temporel dans le Paris des années 60 ; dans ce Paris débordant de style, d’esprit et de séduction, qu’il s’agisse d’un baiser prolongé dans une pâtisserie de Belleville, d’une séance de bronzage sur les quais de Seine en lisant les derniers chapitres d’un roman de Ginsberg ou d’une course poursuite dans les ruelles de l’Ile de la Cité. Les Parisiens diraient, c’est fantastique. Et après tout, pourquoi pas, quand on trouve deux talents aussi incroyables aux commandes que le groupe Aquaserge et la chanteuse April March, aka Elinor Blake ? D’un coté, une troupe de spécialistes en rock psychédélique, dont le batteur Julien Barbagallo de Tame Impala et Benjamin Gilbert, bassiste de Melody’s Echo Chamber. De l’autre, une compositrice californienne de renommée internationale avec son tube pop yéyé Chick Habit, utilisé par Quentin Tarantino dans son thriller Grindhouse, Death Proof. La rencontre entre ces deux univers promet des étincelles…De la pop géniale et si française qui doit tant à Serge Gainsbourg aux nappes d’orgues envoûtantes, ce nouvel album d’April March accompagnée par Aquaserge a été écrit et enregistré à cheval entre deux continents, entre l’appartement d’April à New Jersey et le studio du groupe à Vallesville dans la campagne française. April se souvient: « quand il faisait chaud, on ouvrait les portes et j’enregistrais les voix devant un public qui comprenait des oiseaux et des poules ». La rencontre entre l’américaine et les Français remontent à 2007, alors qu’Aquaserge jouait un concert à Paris. « Une copine nous a invité à l’accompagner sur scène ce soir là » explique l’instrumentaliste Julien Gasc ex-membre de Stereolab, « je me rappelle d’Elinor qui portait une robe en fuchsia. Elle était élégante et resplendissante dans sa manière d’être, de bouger, de danser, de chanter ; c’est notre muse, notre moitié intellectuelle. Nous nous sommes alors découverts des goûts mystérieusement similaires : la musique, les arts, la littérature, le cinéma, la bouffe… C’était essentiel de faire un album ensemble, évident ! ».Mixé à Chicago par le mythique leader de Tortoise, John McEntire, et publié le 13 mai sur le label de Benjamin Schoos, Freaksville, « April March & Aquaqerge » est un disque qui invite au voyage dans ce pays inconnu. Et comme dans un rêve, chaque écoute vous donne envie d’y retourner."
