Flanked by three major ports, namely Harbour Bay (Jodoh), Batam Centre, Nongsapura, Sekupang and Waterfront City (Teluk Senimba), The Government of Indonesia (GOI) started developing Batam as a Bounded Ware House to attract Direct Foreign Investment due to its strategic location in 1971. An increasing scarcity of land in Singapore made Batam an even more attractive option for economic development in the decades after. Eventually, declaring Batam as a Free Trade Zone area for the whole island covering 410 square km in 2006 bridged by the Rempang and Galang islands.
