Then, through the process of wax resist, the intricate design is built.  The first layer of melted beeswax is applied to cover the portion of the egg that will remain white in the final design.  Then the egg is bathed in the first dye, typically yellow or gold.  After the desired shade is achieved, melted beeswax is applied to cover the area of the shell that will remain that color in the final design.  And on it goes.  A soak in the dye and an application of beeswax to protect that area of color from the next dye, repeated over and over until, finally, you have many layers of different colored dyes protected by many layers of hardened beeswax.  After the final dip into the background dye color, the beeswax is melted off in the flame of a candle, revealing the beautiful design that has been written and preserved beneath the beeswax.
