Cecily Paul grew up in Cambridge UK and read medicine and classics at London University. She worked as a paediatric oncologist for five years after qualifying as a doctor. She then married and worked as a family doctor. She took early retirement to pursue her career as an opera director. She has a first-class honours degree in classics from the University of London.
