Vilinski KonjicRE:COGNITION is the first full-length album from the Australian electronic-industrial band [ cell 7 ]. Exploring the melodic/harmonic elements often ignored by many in the genre, [ cell 7 ] have combined precisely crafted songs with intense, splintered electronics to deliver something entirely original. The themes are not necessary melancholic or negative, just introspective and sometimes a little ambiguous to the listener. The rhythms are fractured, complex: never conventional but always danceable. Sometimes entering distorted cyber-breakbeat territory, other times offering a stuttering IDM skeleton to a track. Lush layers of organic and synthetic instrumentation sit within the sound, with potent yet textural vocals above (strains of Dave Gahan, Trent Reznor and David Bowie are traceable in Nick's tones). Bleeding, metallic guitar is not used in the traditional rock sense - more as an impact device to tear through the mix. 'Red' opens the album with a huge bass-driven breakbeat and wrecking ball guitars, then 'The Reason' brings an alien atmosphere and glitchy percussion to the emotional vocals. A dark, aggressive cover of the classic REM track ‘Losing My Religion’ adds much to the intent of the original, and then the epic 'Tesla' closes the album with an antique machine cacophony.Recorded in Perth, Sydney & Amsterdam.
