For the love of flowers, that’s how this all started: wearing SPF 50 and still burning pink, chronic black nails because I always lose my gloves, sweaty skin that’ll never hold make-up, figuring out what carpal tunnel feels like, and a cold beer in glorious shade when it’s been a long hot day. I love my time in the garden, from seedling babies sprouting in February to digging dahlia roots the size of a small cat in the rainy fall. I’d love even more to share this with you Hi! I’m Deb, and I live in Squamish, BC. My husband and I bought our home in 2018 and since then I’ve been ripping up our 8400sqft yard and my jeans trying my hands at subsistence living. It’s been a crash course in residential farming, resulting in beautiful flowers, haphazardly grown vegetables and getting well acquainted with the statement “Sorry dear, I went to the nursery again and just couldn’t help myself”. This is all a far cry from my profession as an ER nurse, but I realized years ago how touching earth settles my heart and soul. Some people yoga, I prefer to rake and hoe. I found growing flowers is a wonderful way for me to find some reprieve from the stress at the hospital, to watch something small as a poppy seed bring forth colour, fragrance, joy and wonder to those around me. I started bringing bouquets to friends, to work, and sold some at farmers markets when I had way more than I knew what to do with. And thus Cliffside Flower Company was born, on the shady side of the Stawamus Chief, on unceded lands of the Coast Salish and Squamish Nations. I specialize in seasonal, pesticide-free flowers for bouquet subscriptions, wedding buckets from August to October. I love wild looking arrangements, and am drawn to fragrant breeds and antique-style flowers. I sell dahlia tubers in the Spring, sweet pea seeds and the Fall, and fresh and dried edible flowers throughout the year. Starting this year I’ll also be offering canning courses, so you can learn how to can jams, pickle vegetables and start your own new obsession with all things preserved.
