His career change was motivated by a desire to help equip entrants to the work force with the skills and knowledge they would need to be successful post-secondary citizens in the global 21st century economy.Click Here To Download Don Dunlap’s [PDF] Resume QUALIFICATIONS A County Commissioner is pretty much the closest elected representative to us.  They are folks that live in the same district as we do.  Folks that we see in the grocery store.  We find ourselves in line with them at a restaurant or walking around our neighborhood.  We expect our commissioners to be our voice for us in local government; because they understand our values, concerns, and issues; because they are literally our neighbors.  That implies some shared experiences.  You need to have a commissioner representing you that has had some of the same experiences that you have, and understands where you are coming from, and can bring that to the table on your behalf.  I am that person for the citizens in District Three.Henry County has never been a “high-falutin’” place.  Folks here are down-to-earth, have a real work ethic, respect for God and each other, and believe your reputation and your word are sacrosanct.  I grew up in Madison County NC, on the Tennessee line.  I lived on Walker Branch Road, so named because a stream (or “branch”) ran through the road and you had to ford it to get to the house.  We heated and cooked with a wood stove (which I busted wood for pretty much every day after school).  Before school, I had to feed cows, chickens, and turkeys before walking down to my neighbor’s house to wait for the bus and the 1.5 hour ride to our county’s only high school.  We had 32 acres and there was always work to be done at home.  I did work some for neighbors on their tobacco farms; cutting, spudding, and hanging burley tobacco.  I would submit that’s not a very high-falutin’ upbringing.  I understand hard work, manual labor, and having to do stuff because it’s an integral part of your family’s existence. You want a representative on the Board of Commissioners who understands commuting back and forth to work, and the impact that has on your quality of life, and will work to minimize the negative impacts of that commute.  I’ve commuted to work in several areas in the southeast; and whether it’s Asheville, Charlotte, or Atlanta; my commutes have always included a place where everything just stopped – the Beaucatcher Tunnel in Asheville, Tryon Ave. on I-77 in Charlotte, or the Grady Curve in Atlanta – been there done that.  Wouldn’t it be helpful if you were represented by someone who had managed a business and had experienced covering shifts, making payroll, negotiating with vendors, keeping customers happy, making a profit, achieving business goals, and had never quit, regardless of how tough it got?  I’ve done everything from front line supervision to managing 400+ employees.  I’ve been responsible for everything from a single restaurant to a 6,500 car fleet and maintenance operation in multiple locations.  I’ve worked in multinational corporations and owned my own little firm.  I have been in just about every business situation you can imagine.Your BOC representative should have considerable community ties through service with local non-profit and community organizations, shouldn’t they?  I have served on the Board of Directors of many local non-profit, community, and business organizations in Henry County; most as an officer.  Whether it’s homelessness, youth advocacy, small business, etc.  I have been doing that work in Henry County for quite a while. Many people talk about the importance of “investing in our youth” but few actually do.  I actually sold my business so I could teach business to Henry County students at our system’s alternative school from 2004 until now.  In addition to teaching our youth in the classroom, I led the Youth Leadership Henry program for our Chamber of Commerce from 2011 until this January, when I resigned to pursue this campaign.  I was also honored to be consulted by City Council members in McDonough and Stockbridge when they were starting their respective youth councils; and to be able to assist with Our World School which serves special needs students in our community. In addition to the knowledge I have gained working with non-profit and community organizations on issues like homelessness, youth development, home repair etc, I have also been able to work with other community leaders on a variety of issues through participation in many of the annual Intergovernmental Retreats and monthly meetings with them as a member of the Chamber’s board of directors.  Being appointed as Chair of the Henry First committee, and the CARES Act committee I also have gotten to know and work with many of the key players in county government as well.I have always been efficient and effective in everythi
