Adieu à la CrècheDescending onto the strange landscape of Guileless, the fourth in a series of instrumental cassette releases by Jeanne Vomit-Terror, it is tempting to reach for comfortable but meaningless terms like “alien jazz.” You’d be right, but for the wrong reasons. Guileless is not so much the soundtrack for a sci-fi film as it is the sonic equivalent of Ridley Scott bound and gagged by his Foley artists on the eighth day of a strike. The pulse of a particle beam, the hiss of pneumatic doors, the crunching of moon rocks under steel treads – all are assembled into song.The record does have precursors here on Earth. "Thiopental Gimlet”suggests the buoyant, skittering experimentation of early Yellow Magic Orchestra, perhaps fresh from a trip to the arcade. Even without knowing that this cassette is culled from a series of improvised live streams, listeners will sense the spontaneity and spirit of exploration almost immediately.Side B posits Guileless as a dance record, starting somewhere in the Berlin underground – but the serotonin drip is provisional. Rhythms begin to fray as hi-hats resist the prescribed intervals, slicing up incrementally smaller subdivisions of the grid and recalling, perhaps, the kit work of JVT friend and collaborator Pez Hed. Although Jeanne rarely issues a definitive artist statement, one can infer quite a lot from a track’s title: “Let’s Dematerialize.” Yes, we are hearing the battle between art and commerce unfold in real-time.And it makes sense to approach this album as an outgrowth of themes explored on Jeanne’s vocal-driven recordings: luxury and decay, death and rebirth, identities subverted and reclaimed, and all the other detritus of late capitalism. These tracks inhabit the same demimonde, which extends all the way back to the first (and still essential) Resonant Hole recordings.Geoff Sessions, 2022
