Johann KloosI've been making music almost all my life in one way or another as a solo artist, or in various bands/collaborations in Herts/Essex: (Bankers Son's Daughters, The Decibels, Some People Are Asleep, Ha Ha Said The Car, Erick} and in Salford/Manchester: (The Sandells, KP2, The Bus Pass)Sci-Fi Greats, released 26 March 20211. The Thing In Westminster AbbeyI've always wanted to make soundscapes which evoke other worlds, lunar landscapes, that sort of thing. I always thought that was what synthesisers were made for. I was making electronic "music" since I was 15, using homemade oscillators and primitive recording techniques, with what little I had to play with. A two track cassette recorder, a Philips valve radio I used as an amplifier and sound source. It's what led me to pursue music as a source of expression, while harbouring dreams of being a pop star, which have forever been thwarted. I took bits of advice....add beats, buy a four track, do this do that....the bar has always been raised on what one should do. Anyway those oscillators and cassette recorders are long gone, and like many I've turned to the world of computers to realise my musical dreams. This is a collection of electronic soundscapes made in the late noughties on my PC, mostly created with a program "AudioMulch," with its modular environment, containing sample players, arpeggiators, granular synthesis, and some basic 303 style bass line sequencers and other gadgets. I had a lot of fun experimenting with it. I used sounds created in programs like Bitmaps and Waves, which converts picture files into sound. I started drawing the sounds in Microsoft Paint to make squiggly sounds, glissandos, and experimented with the synthesis parameters, stretching the sounds. Ending up with sounds not dissimilar to those picked up from outer space, radio signals from distant planets and stars. "The Thing In The Abbey" uses those sounds extensively. The title refers to the monster from "The Quatermass Experiment." An alien fungus - like lifeform which used an astronaut as a host to invade the Earth, absorbing all life in its path, birds, plants, hapless chemists, all the animals in London Zoo... It climbs to a high spot in Westminster Abbey to release its spores. "What a way to invade the Earth..."
