Lasse Passage is a modern day troubadour on his newest EP Ladies Night, his usual folk songs reimagined under disco lights. Since 2015, Passage has been curating a series of songs outside his singer-songwriter set, trying the tunes out on unsuspecting live-fans. Regular Passage concert goers are sure to recognize many of the tracks as Lasse debuted them at the end of his regular sets, changing his clothes as if introducing them to a new split personality; his voice modulating to a higher frequency, careening into the joyful and the absurd. In his live set, a projector throws his lyrics up on the wall behind him, allowing the audience to sing along, karaoke-style: “Honey, if you want me - please just come. Cuz I don’t wanna stand here in the bar, all alone. I’ve had you in the corner of my eye, ever since your booty came into town.” Ladies Night is a delightful amalgamation of material that didn’t quite fit the mold, songs that were too playful, too experimental, too damn weird to put on a Lasse Passage Album. “I made lots of these songs typically just before a new live-gig - finishing them up just in time,” Lasse said of the off-the-cuff songwriting experience. “It would give me a real kick to have this element of surprise in my live-show - and shuffle up what you’d expect from a singer/songwriter with a guitar. I’d have lots of fun throwing in a vocoding techno song and juxtapose that with my more sincere songwriter output”All of the songs on Ladies Night were written on various outdated pieces of equipment - like the Casio SK5, Roland MC-303 Groovebox and the Alesis HR-16 drum machine. Passage enjoyed playing with the cheesy 80s presets, and the lo-fi feel of creating music with only his own voice and some inexpensive second hand equipment. In limiting what synths he used on the EP, Lasse showcases a wide range of songwriting tactics; from the initial metallic feedback of his opening song “Ladies Night” to the laid back crooner style of “Good Good Girl,” each song is an ode to bedroom pop, that unique, more intimate breed of songwriting.  For Passage, Ladies Night strips him of his usual personae, allowing him to share a more eccentric, light-hearted side of himself. “It’s time to let the fools out!” Lasse says of the previously unreleased material. Revealing these B-Sides, these stepsister recordings with their raw emotions and DIY style, feels akin to stepping into a teenager's bedroom: going back to the place inside himself where the spark of creativity began. With this recording under his belt, Lasse Passage is looking to meld his early recordings with his raw live performances, creating a sound that pulls together two parts of a whole.
