I Am A PilgrimPeter Keane: Vocals, Guitar, Basswith Marty Muse: Pedal Steel GuitarBlues | Ballads | Cowboy Songs: Liner NotesThe tracks included here were recorded at home during late 2020 and early 2021. I played a Gibson archtop guitar and a Squier VI bass. Having a live drummer was not possible, so I used pre-recorded drum loops for a couple of tracks. Marty Muse added pedal steel guitar to “Clay Pigeons” and “Crazy Heart” (a bit of Drifting Cowboys flavor...).A home recording project like this, especially during a lockdown, inevitably becomes a family affair. I owe a great debt to my wife Amy and son Eamonn, both for their patience and tolerance of the never-ending recording sessions, and (more importantly) for their excellent advice about song selection, arrangements, and performance choices. To the extent that this record has a “producer” credit, it goes to Amy & Eamonn. Thanks also to Rob Halverson for making my home recordings sound like they were made in a real studio and to Jim Wilson for making the whole set really come to life. Once again, I had the great pleasure and honor of working with Angelynn Grant, who has created another amazing design.—Peter Keane*******************************************Peter and I were inspired by several threads and themes in midcentury graphic design in the making of this CD package, most especially the album covers on the Command and Project 3 record labels from the late 1950s to late 1960s. In particular, the cover here draws heavily from the work of Charles E. Murphy, whose art direction and design for Tony Mottola’s Heart & Soul Guitar and Guitar…Mottola served as our starting points. Murphy was trained at the Yale School of Art design program under renowned painter and Bauhaus member Josef Albers. Also teaching at Yale at that time was another inspiration for this project: the prolifically creative Alvin Lustig. Murphy went on to become art director for Command and commissioned designs from many design luminaries including Albers and greats like George Giusti and S. Neil Fujita. —Angelynn GrantAngelynn Grant, who also studied design at Yale, has a studio in Cambridge, Massachusetts, specializing in graphic design for print and the web. Since 1991 she has been the host/producer of Coffeetime, a weekly radio show on WMBR at MIT featuring jazz, early pop, and rhythm & blues from the 1920s to the 1970s. You can find more about her at angelynngrant.com and about Coffeetime at coffeetimeblog.org.
