Setting time aside each week to meal prep is an ingenious move. It will save you time during the week, money, help you reach your health goals, and keep you organized. So taking time to meal prep on a week-end, or whatever day works for you is an amazing habit to develop. But let’s face it, it can be time-consuming.Something I’ve learned from meal planning and meal prepping is that taking short cuts are OK. Reaching for pre-washed, pre-chopped, “a la carte”, or “to-go” items to help with meal prep can be a little more expensive, but it can also be a sanity saver. It saves me a ton of time, energy, and effort spent cleaning up. And I still feel like I save a ton of money in the long-run packing my lunches using pre-prepared foods. Where I work lunch is usually around $10, so approx $40 a week. $160 dollars per month. $1920 per year. Spent. On. Lunch. Every. Year. Just. For. Me.Here are 7 of my favorite, all natural, healthy, “a la carte”, “to-go” items right from your local grocery store to make your meal prep go smoother. Just make sure to read all of the labels before you purchase any of these items so you know exactly what you are buying and what the nutritional content is.Hummus. This delicious Mediterranean bean dip is a nutritious snack and it doesn’t need to be made weekly from scratch. There are some really great, affordable, all natural brands that can be found right at your neighborhood grocery store.2. Boxed greens. Salads and greens just got a whole lot simpler because you won’t be washing and chopping any leaves.3. Pre-chopped fruit. Occasionally I will buy a fruit tray when I see them on sale and divide them up for breakfast and snacks. This saves the hassle and sticky mess of chopping up fruit. A large warehouse I visit monthly also has pre-packaged chopped organic apple slices that I buy from time to time when I see them.4. Spiralized veggies. There really isn’t any need to invest in a veggie spiralizer and save yourself some money. Many grocery stores sell pre-spiralized vegetables like zucchini and sweet potatoes. They might seem expensive but I use them so infrequently it saves a ton of time just to buy them pre-prepared.5. Frozen veggies. Frozen veggies can be just as nutritious as fresh and don’t require all of the chopping and dicing so there is also no need for clean up. Frozen veggies are absolutely amazing in stir fries and are also fantastic boiled or steamed.6. Cauliflower rice. Save yourself the mess, time, and effort and just buy it prepared-either fresh or frozen.7. Canned lentils and beans. Although the dried version might save you some money, buying beans in the can will save you a ton of time.Do you use any of these pre-packaged ingredients to help save time with meal planning and meal prepping? Do you have any other prepared foods that you use and how do you use them? Let me know in the comments below.
