Rico Alice’s second full-length project is both architect and structure; the album truly mimics the function of remembering, wherein the brain does not recall- but actually reconstructs- memory. A lyrically diverse exploration of identity that is clearly entangled in time and space, the soundscape feels urban even before Alice lyrically conjures Somerville, a Boston neighborhood where much of the project was written. Through wispy beats and harpy, airy harmonies, he closes the first track crooning “I don’t recognize me.” Alice continues this self exploration with gendered bars like, “I don’t wear this dress so my daddy’s proud of me,” and several tracks with what sounds like voicemails for loved ones. In darker songs like “Menthol,” you can almost see smoke clouds in flickering street lights, and feel the east coast pavement under your feet. Alice then invites you to an underground basement party in “Woes,” and later conjures an intimate, jazzy dinner concert at the piano with “Heart Energy.” The final cut flips and spins in a J Dilla-esque ending to this beautiful story. Nothing less than nostalgic, each of the eight, genre bending tracks listen like intimate diary entries. -Katherine Leonard
