He likes Francoise Hardy and David Bowie, the latter being someone Sheridan was listening to quite a bit during the mixing of Patagonia. So with a bit of what most people wouldn’t consider planning, three brothers arrived in Argentina with charades being the only foreign language any of us was proficient in. Our internal compasses wasted no time pointing us toward oblivion in the Andes. Perhaps a bit too eager, we spent our 3rd day lost and mistaken, skirting over scree slopes, failing to negotiate through brush, and eventually sledding on our packs down a ravine to beat the dying light. Although safe, we soon learned the price of our day wandering astray would be a night squirming in the swamp. Eventually making it to our destination a night late, we were asked if we saw the helicopter. It wasn’t until after a bottle of wine that our refugio host confided in us that a man had been blown off of our same trail and to his demise a day before we arrived. Maybe taking our time and getting lost had saved our lives. And that was just our first three days.There are places music comes from. And then there are the places music creates. Patagonia is the album that emerged scraped, scathed, and whole from our wandering. The record is a loose cycle paralleling the trip I partially remember, looping and lolloping forward with wry abandon, telling its stories of minor epiphanies and amusing missteps with subtlety, charm, and vigor. These are songs of everyday setbacks and successes, streamed through the prism of Patagonia.
