Why wasn’t there a better type of hook that would go through the brush and cover where the fish live, and go through more easily while improving hookup and landing success at the same time? It seemed impossible, until Nicole conceived of a hook system that was going to be a game changer in the world of fishing. She said it should be completely snag-proof when closed with the tips and barbs protected, but then would open like an umbrella upon receiving a strike from a fish. With that, Emery ran with the concept. After many evenings of making rudimentary prototypes, and field testing them when possible; things started to come together. Brian and Emery worked with the rudimentary prototypes, improved them, and actually caught fish with them....but the design wasn’t complete. They needed a way to produce more and to perfect the design. This would mean more hooks were needed and they had to be specialized. With that, Emery contacted a few of the large wire hook manufacturers for help. No help was to be found. The large wire hook manufacturers wouldn’t make batches of less than 50 to 100 thousand at a time. This wasn’t even feasible for the small entrepreneurs. This forced them to seek other means of making the hook system. In the meantime, the idea had to be protected. The team filed a provisional patent to insure they had the idea on the books first. At this point, Emery started researching help with prototyping. By happenstance, he came across a small company called Jack Hooks and made contact with the owner, Karl Beitzel. Karl said he would be happy to help. Over the next year with much work and collaboration, the concept improved and evolved into something that will change the fishing game forever.
