So, are you hype enough yet? Scroll down and let’s get started on your journey! What is a Goalkeeper and its importance? Being a goalkeeper in Soccer is arguably the most important position in Soccer and is also one of the toughest. This position is considered the last line of defense meaning when the opposing team takes the ball past the defense, it is up to you to save the ball from going into the goal. One thing that makes this position so unique, is that you have the ability to use any part of your body to keep the ball from entering the goal, including the hands. This gives a huge advantage on defense. That being said, big advantages also come with big responsibilities which is to do EVERYTHING you can to keep the ball from going in the net and prevent the other team from scoring. This includes diving, challenging breakaways, and getting really dirty! To add, you have to be laser focused the entire game, anticipate potential opportunities where the opposing team might challenge you, and always remain confident. We will dive deeper into these topics in just a little bit. I cannot wait for you to scroll down and begin your journey! Always Stay 100% Confident Imagine you’re the goalie and your team is in the finals, the game is tied 2-2 and within the final minutes of regulation. The opposing team works their way down the field and beats the defenders. It is now up to you to. Your team, the fans, and the coaches are all depending on you to make the save. The striker takes a shot to the corner of the goal, you make a stretching dive to attempt to save it. But, the ball just sails above your fingertips and the other team scores. Bummer! Now, you can see the opposing team crazily celebrate, along with the fans, and coaches. 5 seconds after the goal is scored, your team rushes to get the ball to midfield in an attempt to score and save the game. Immediately, when your team kicks the ball off at midfield, the referee blows the whistle, TWEET!, TWEET! TWEEEET!. The game is over. You can see the opposing team frantically celebrating, hoisting the 1st place trophy, and dumping ice cold gatorade on the coach. As a keeper, it is easy to think that this is all your fault. You might think that you let your teammates and coaches down. Getting through this pressure and stress can be tough and it takes a lot of mental strength to overcome. But here is a 4-step formula that worked really well for me that helped me cope with pressure. When you get scored on you need to… Quickly retrieve the ball and get it back to midfield. This is huge because if you make a habit of this, it may distract you from any immediate negative thoughts about yourself relating to what just happened. Always make a positive comment after the goal is scored on you. Most times, when a goal is scored by the opposing team, your team tends to feel down, sad, and even angry. It is important to never say something criticizing your team because that would just make theirs and your attitude even worse. I like to think that goalkeepers are the “backbone” of a Soccer team. Making a positive comment could brighten the mood of your players and give them motivation. When a goal is scored on me, I usually comment something like, “Hey! Keep your heads up, let’s get another one!” Carefully examine what you did wrong and how you could make it better. You can’t control how well your teammates do, but you can certainly control how well you can do. Think about what previously happened and what you could’ve done better. Be careful though, in this, there are a lot of opportunities to say something negative about yourself so always have a positive attitude. If you weren’t quick enough to dive in that situation, maybe tell yourself to pay more attention to the opposing players hips and feet so you can get an idea of where the player might shoot. Keep your head up and continue to work hard. Make sure to always keep your head up and do not let any negative comments penetrate your mind. Encourage yourself and your teammates to work hard as well! All of this is based on two words, mental strength. This can be tough, but continuing to remain confident with a positive attitude could determine the chance of a win or loss. You Need to Maintain Correct Positioning Correct positioning is everything to a goalkeeper. At all times a goalie must know the size of the goal they are dealing with because depending on if you are a travel soccer player or not, the size of the goal might differ. Before the game starts, you should examine the size of the goal you are dealing with. Jump and touch the crossbar before the game starts to make estimations of how high you need to jump. There are so many situations while on the pitch where you need to find correct positioning. But don’t worry! We have YouTube videos that will help you to succeed! We will go over positioning for penalty kicks later in this blog. A couple of tips I want to give you before we let the videos take over are that your body should always be in line with the ball. This gives you the best chance of saving a goal. If your body is turned too far to the right of the ball, and the attacker shoots the ball to your left side, it will be much harder for you to make a big save. Also, wherever the ball moves, you need to mirror the ball and move with it. Meaning, if your team possesses the ball in the opponents half, you need to move higher up in the goalie box. If the other team is making progress by moving the ball towards your goal, you need to move back near the 6 yard box and prepare for a shot. If the ball is on the left side of the field, you need to move to the left side of the goal and vise-versa. Now it is time for you to master the positioning of a goalkeeper. Please watch all of the videos in order to get a full understanding. I also recommend you practice what is in these videos. All you need is a partner (Can be friend, or family member), some grassy space, 2 cones to set up a goal (if you already have a goal, that’s okay). It is imperative that goalies are constantly in communication with their defenders to minimize any goal scoring opportunities. The key is to instruct your
