SunsetBack in Olympia, '03 or '04 Aaron Shallenberger enlisted me, Grant Fairbrother and Eli Moore to play in his surf band; Square Waves. We even had our friend and fellow roommate Robin Anderson sing "surfy' vocals for a practice or two. That winter we were the backing band for a theatrical rendition of Point Break, where the actors took a volunteer from the audience to portray Keanu Reeves, and we provided on the spot surf music. The songs on this recording are from when the band reemerged in Seattle in 2008. Aaron moved there and we began a new version of Square Waves with myself on bass and Lucas Carlyle on drums. From my corner, a strong influence of Turkish Psychedelic Rock emerged as I was full on into that at the time. Though not solely, Aaron has always been obsessed with American Surf music; its culture and sound, the origin, and most of all its strange and deep "California-ness.”Deliriously Aaron and I mixed this record live. One of us controlled the effects and the other the dry signals between two different consoles with guitar pedal routed aux sends. We gave the songs another round of performance through our live processing while having a lot laughs and a couple meltdowns as I think we pulled two consecutive all nighters. Lucas, the one audio professional among us, mastered the tracks and confirmed that our mixing procedure probably wouldn’t have happened that way if he were involved. But ultimately he loves it. So, sit back or dance and enjoy our madness from way back then.
