Jordan Rodger - Hedgerow Complete2. Marlene Radice - Marine Layer Birds3. Flux - Fissure4. Flux - Pumice5. Reuben Ingall & Leon Twardy - First SipSoundscapes is a monthly music thing, showcasing acts from the Canberra region, somewhere in the alternative / experimental / sound art / other / uncategorised zones.Jordan Rodger - Hedgerow CompleteMarlene Radice - Marine Layer BirdsThese tracks were created through a virtual collaboration between Jordan Rodger and Marlene Radice, which involved the exchange of various loops and audio excerpts that were then shaped into two sprawling, ambient collages. The sound files served as springboards for us to improvise and respond to, and despite not being together physically, the influence of each musician's style on the other is evident.Flux - Fissure & PumiceFlux (Rhys Butler & Richard Johnson) is a duo of two uncompromising free improvising saxophonists/wind players that focus on extended techniques. Flux primarily explores the possibilities of expanding the palette and range of sounds that are available to their chosen instruments by delving ever deeper into the cracks between the “standard notes” on wind instruments. These recordings are part of a series of improvisations Flux has been working on in recent months during C19. As individuals artists they have played with a range of international/national and local artists including Jaap Blonk, Xavier Charles, Jon Rose, Hans Koch, Guylaine Cosseron, Paal Nilssen-Love, Roger Turner, Jim Denley, Kim Myhr, Annette Giesreigl, Isaiah Ceccarelli, Yan Jun, Laura Altman, Michael Norris, Stephen Roach, Annette Krebs, Nick Ashwood etc. They also have a trio with saxophonist John Porter called Psithurism - their album LURE is available from SoundOut Recordings bandcamp.Fissure refers to the idea of following the fissures of sound in the moment and letting them lead the improvisation. Pumice, as it floats on the ocean, seemingly heavy in its rock-like shape and hardened exterior but ultimately extremely light being filled with air bubbles in its making… volcanic ash.Reuben Ingall & Leon Twardy - First SipReuben and Leon first met in 2005(?). First Sip is a mix/medley of four recordings from recent live improvisation sessions, ordered such that each section is a little more accessible / traditional / harmonic. Reuben plays no-input mixing board with overdrive, looper, and reverb units added. Leon plays drum kit, piano and gambang kayu (Indonesian, xylophonic). However, the first section sees them playing each other’s instruments. The focussed noise of the opening movement leads to increasingly dynamic flailing and a punky skid downhill. The latter portion tests Reuben’s ability/inclination to play the mixer-feedback in tune with Leon’s playful multi-instrument-tasking and a sublime piano excursion.
