Move OnThe son of evangelical missionaries, Luke Abbott was born a drifter moving around the world, from California to Japan, finally settling in western Washington. His life was the Baptist church; following in the footsteps of other Christian singer-songwriters like David Bazan, Abbott attended Northwest University, a Christian liberal arts college in Seattle where he studied music. It was in college that his religious commitment started to waver, following a series of faith-shattering events like the divorce of his parents and witnessing religious hypocrisy up close as he rose through the ranks as a music pastor. Abbott eventually traded his faith community and all his possessions for a fishing boat in Alaska after the loss of his mother. It was here many of the songs on The Drifter Luke, Part One were written in the solitude of the Chatham Strait. With clear influences from Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, and Jason Isbell, The Drifter Luke, Part One is an instant Americana classic. “This record was my way of exploring a world that is not built on absolute truths,” says Abbott. Luke’s lyrics weave a story of coping with loss--loss of love, faith, and even hope.
