We share our home with three species of serpents: Corn Snakes, Royal Pythons, also known as Ball Pythons, and a Red-Tailed Boa. All of them are constrictors. All of them are NON-venomous. All of them interact with us on a daily basis, are keenly aware of their environments, and keep their curious, critical eyes on all we do. Our serpents do much more than simply exist in their elaborate habitats. They are active, engaged members of our household in myriad, vital ways. They are the quiet, dignified focal points of most of our rooms, their stunning patterns and colors clearly visible through the sparkling glass sides of their enclosures. In contrast to what some people say about snakes not liking to be handled or held, our serpents cling to our hands whenever we reach for them, seeming to look forward to their hands-on time with us, just as much as we enjoy the calming sensation of their comforting, elegant muscular embrace.This is Kai, one of our Corn Snakes. She often forms the sign for infinity when she wraps herself around my wrist and hand.As serpents go, most Corn Snakes are dependably friendly, curious, watchful and fast moving. Their bodies are comparatively slender and their vibrant colors, or morphs, are among their most alluring attributes.Royal Pythons are much heavier than the Corns, thick bodied and regally languid in their movements. They are so named because they were often worn like living jewelry, wrapped around the necks and arms of African royalty. They’re also commonly called “Ball” Pythons due to their supposed tendency to ball up in a defensive posture when they’re afraid, although this isn’t something we normally observe at The Serpent House - maybe because there’s nothing in the environment here to scare them. Generally, Royal Pythons are gentle, responsive, astute agents of their world.Our Red-Tailed Boa is the largest species with whom we share our home. She’s a long, stunning, full-bodied creature whose eyes are sharp and cat-like, and whose grip is deliberate and ripples with power. At over 6-feet- long, she’s our docile, sweet-tempered giant baby, who’s still quite far from being full grown. Oh my…!
