So rare is the combination of the two contrasting instruments accordion and bassoon that there are only very few original compositions for this instrumentation. The compositions and arrangements of pianist and accordionist Thomas Peter-Horas bridge these contrasts marvellously, merging and unifying them in a convincing manner.Together with bassoonist Ulrike Fröhling, he has created a unique and unusual world of sound, ranging from arrangements of traditional klezmer pieces such as Bessarabianke or Dobranotsh and the usage of Balkan rhythms in Drei Tänze (“Three Dances”) or Maracaibo through to the quirky ideas contained in Ragtime or the cycle Sechs schnelle Duelle (“Six fast duels”). Incidentally, in the latter, Thomas Peter-Horas plays a bass accordion, which is normally intended to be used as a solo instrument.Even in the more traditionally classical combination of bassoon and piano, Unerhört Fagott’s music is still extraordinary. A good case in point is the suite Das leichte Leben (“Easy life”), the title piece of this CD. It brings together melancholy and playfulness and links elements of minimal music with those of classical modernism. The last track on this album is Hopsack – a little musical joke and the duo’s brief excursion into the genre of jazz.
