unknown artist 22/11/661-man band armed w/ a 4-track. “Unknown Artist” was the name assigned by modern software when these old home-grown tapes from the late '80s were recently digitized + it seemed apropos. 22/11/66 is his date of birth. After recording these tapes, he graduated from UC Santa Cruz (w/ a degree in math), sold all of his instruments + wandered the earth for 30 years returning as Sound Furies.the unheard tapes, released 15 November 20171. unheard silence2. fishes in green +3. stranger to myself +4. motionless roadside +5. silence comes + goes6. monument +7. tempest8. lattice of coincidence +9. the unlearning10. drowning log11. skin12. ice age +13. asleep at the wheel14. untitled15. silent movies +16. shadow to the wind17. storm / after math +18. young + untold19. silence in between20. the empty drawer21. Often old/found recorded-over tapes were reused, so remnant bits might remain + since 4-tracks recorded at ½-speed using both sides of a standard cassette, residual noises might be backwards + at 2x the speed. A "1/e delay" was regularly used on the guitars (dividing the number of beats in the song by the natural logarithm, e ( = 2.718281…) to obtain the delay pedal setting). Songs were mixed on cassettes + given away to a few friends + family + traded w/ other home-recording enthusiasts, as was the culture in the '80s (that we’re re-issuing this on cassette is not a kitschy or ironic gesture—this was the original target format). Eventually 3 cassettes were self-released under the DIY "Tapestry Tapes” label—The Ethereal Aether (1988), Whorl (spring of '89) + Starfisheye (winter of '89). Then in the '90s everyone switched to CD + these tapes were forgotten about. The tracks on this tape are arranged roughly in chronological order. Tracks #1, 2, 8, 10, 13 + 14 (recorded 1984-88) were previously unreleased (except for 1-off mix tapes), as well as other odd clips remixed into other tracks. Tracks # 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 + 9 appeared on The Ethereal Aether (1988). Tracks # 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18 + 19 appeared on Whorl (1989). Tracks # 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 + 26 appeared on Starfisheye (1989).... + no, we didn't screw up + remaster these too quietly, it's the rest of the world (post-90s) that's cranking the volume louder + louder just to be heard, at the expense of sound quality.
