VOICES OF THE EAST END pt4The Voices of the East End is a radio piece made by musicians Roshi Nasehi and Graham Dowdall with the Fern St Singers - a group of elderly East Londoners who have been meeting, singing and reminiscing with Roshi for several years. The piece was made through the assistance of a Community Champions grant from The Scarman Trust. As Roshi says...'We felt that this group represented the last of a special generation who had withstood the Blitz and witnessed enormous changes in East London and we wanted to capture their songs, memories and stories which were at risk of being lost forever. 3 members of the group, Terri, Margaret and Maisie have sadly passed away since the piece was made and we are very pleased to have captured some of their memories. We wanted to make the piece available for download, for people's listening pleasure and in the hope that we will raise some small funds to help keep this creative lifeline going. The opportunity to meet and sing is of huge benefit to these pensioners who are part of a generation to whom we, as contemporary Londoners, owe so much. Feel free to donate as much as you can and do enjoy listening to their personal tales, evocative singing and uncrushable spirit against the backdrop of the chinking of teacups.' The picture is of former student Terri who shared many tales in the radio piece and attended the group for around 9 years. Terri sadly passed away in February 2012 aged 98 years old. Her wonderful spirit and love of people, stories, singing and dancing is very much felt in the piece.
