Last Buzz HomeWaiata and the WordSometimes I feel like a king, sometimes I moan in my own prison.Swaying between these statesI can’t be proud of myself. This “I” is a figment of my imagination. This translation of a quatrain by 13th century Persian poet and mystic Rumi was unearthed by Troy Hunt in a book entitled Rumi – Whispers of the Beloved at a friend’s bach in Raumati South on the Kapiti Coast, New Zealand/Aotearoa. He set it to music, and several local musicians hitched a ride on the song’s catchy melody. The piece gathered added meaning when poet Lindsay Rabbitt injected his poem, The Beats, and the project/troupe Waiata and the Word was birthed. The album is dedicated to musician friend and noted environmentalist Leon Kiel who passed away while the troupe was travelling to its first gig in 2009, and includes songs by Hunt, Phill Simmonds, Sigrid Woolloff, Nigel Patterson, Paul “Boggy” Bognuda and poems by Rabbitt, anchored by bass player Tim Jaray and drummer Luther Hunt and guest musicians. The works in part explore Rumi’s existential conundrum alongside takes of what it means to be human in the 21th century.
