Give Up Your LightOn his first Wedding Dress album since officially leaving Maps & Atlases in 2014, The Flood Feeling finds Erin Elders tossing his guitar aside to play musical ringleader. Recorded by Tim Iseler, across several years, in multiple Chicago recording studios, the album features contributions from Wedding Dress mainstays Chris Dye (Chin Up Chin Up) and Matthew Lemke (Wet Mouth), as well as Geoff Farina (Karate), Nathan Syndacker (Chin Up Chin Up), Pete Croke (Brokeback), Mike Russell (Campdogzz), Adam Mohundro (Tinkerbelles), Christian Dawson (Tinkerbelles), Bobby Burg (Joan of Arc), Angela Mullenhour (Touched by Ghoul), and Marie-Claire Balabanian (Speck Mountain).After returning to his home state of Wisconsin, Elders wrote much of the album on the edge of an emotional collapse. The result feels like a breaking fever; songs damp with melancholy, yet glowing with euphoria. The Flood Feeling explores the kaleidoscope of human desperation.The 11 song set ranges from lush maximalism (Ashes in a Box), to locomotive rippers (Dropped Coins, Along for the Ride), to new wave grooves (Already Shaking), to heartbreaking dirges (I Don’t Know Love by Its Name, Hard-Voiced). Elders’ vocals take front and center here, but the Maps & Atlases-esge urge for rhythmic experimentation seeps into almost every track. Dye’s clockwork drumming holds the whole thing together, offset by Lemke’s gauzy, Brian Eno tinged, textures.
