Life Is EverythingSo who are the Glorious Strangers? Principally Carol and Wharton Tiers, though they were joined by many nyc musicians for live gigs at Danceteria, CBGB’s and the Mudd Club. This release celebrates the completion Forty Years ago of the first Glorious Strangers lp. Billboard called them “a new band that eschews pretention in favor of the snappy pop song,” That was not the thrust of the song style in NYC in the early 80’s, but dig and you will find a lot of that grit here. Wharton Tiers was just at the beginning of his Production career, after playing with seminal No Wave band Theoretical Girls, and the Quite artistic Laurie Anderson. The Glorious Strangers material evolved for a couple of Years using a four track reel to reel and then fleshed out in a few hours of frantic recording With Mark Hood at Celebration Recording, a jingle house in midtown Manhattan. Wharton Added all the house instruments he could get his hands on (ah, the mellotron!) and Carol Tiers added her lovely vocals. The last few tracks were recorded at Fun City Studio Eight track style and the record was born. This release is minus a couple lp tracks (revisionist inclined), but Includes the two songs from the single which were not on the original lp. All the mixes are Presented in their original glory including the original mix of Army not on the single. In the words of College Radio Report “Glorious Indeed!”
