I am a mother of four, two girls and two boys, who delivered all four children naturally. I'm also a Doula who's passion is helping other women enjoy the birth experience through natural childbirth.I was born and raised in Seattle, WA. At the age of ten I began to run track which sparked my interest in health and fitness. I went on to run track at and graduate from Washington State University, where I majored in Sport Management. After graduation I married and worked as a fitness instructor in Greenwood Village,CO, until I became pregnant and to ill from morning sickness to work. I had always planned on working for a professional or collegiate sports organization or at a health club. I wanted to work and become established in my career before starting a family. But the Universe had other plans. I became pregnant just a few months after getting married, moving and starting my new job. After finding out I was pregnant I wanted to read every book, watch every documentary, and hear every birth story. The more I learned the more I wanted to know. After speaking to my mother and mother in law I decided I wanted an unmedicated labor and birth because they both had done it. They were the only ones who were encouraging. When I began to talk to friends and other family and even medical professionals they mostly did the opposite; it will hurt, that’s what the drugs are for, why experience the pain and suffering if you don't have to these are just some of the things they said to discourage me. But I was determined to do it. So I went online and signed us up for the natural childbirth classes at the hospital where I would be delivering. These classes were a big help and adapted things I learned there made them own and used it for my labor. Although I had been preparing daily, I had a friend who had her baby just a few days before me and she called to tell me how horrible it was. But my sister in law called to reassure me “it wasn't that bad and tell me I could do it. Just stay calm and take them one at a time.” 12:45am July 12, 2007 I went to use the bathroom and my water broke walking back from the bathroom to the bed. I stood there, walked back to the bathroom and thought stay calm nothing is different. You will just be a mother very soon and I took a shower. I remembered what my mother, mother in law and sister in law told me just let them come and continue doing your normal activities until you can’t. Their strength gave me strength, I surrendered to the intensity and folded into the rest in between. My mother in law was there with my husband and I, she was like our doula. She advocated for me and helped me know that my body and labor and birth were my own and I could do it the way I planned. She reminded me that God was in control and to let my body surrender to the process and open up. To be thankful for the opportunity to be a mother, to bring forth new life into this world. I was built for this and my body would find a way to release this baby into the world. I was reminded of the blessings, of the love, and strength it took to get there. I thought about the whole nine months it took to get to those final few hours, final moments and last push. It was finally the moment I had waited for. I was elated, exhausted, and fulfilled. I had done it. My body grew a baby and then opened up for me to become a mother. At this moment I realized how much my inner strength and how connected my mind and thoughts are to my body. It's not happening to me, it is me. From this experience I knew I wanted to do whatever I could to help as many women as possible have a safe and satisfying natural birth. I knew changing the narrative by praising our strength and not fearing the pain was where to start.I used my birthing method with each of my four labor and deliveries. While each of my labors were different, I was able to use the same technique with all of them. I enjoy learning, baking, running, hiking, nature, and homeschooling my children. I can't wait to help you with your childbirth journey!-Alexa
