Robert Townsend was the spy "Culper Jr" in George Washington's spy ring during the American Revolution. Elizabeth or Liss was a slave owned by the Townsends who escaped from the Townsend home in Oyster Bay at the same time that Robert began his spying. It is possible that Liss was the mysterious Lady spy 355. 355 was the code name for "lady" in the Culper spy dictionary. Painstaking crafted entirely from primary documents over 16 years of research by Claire Bellerjeau, this book provides an extraordinary new telling of America's founding through the eyes of an enslaved woman of color. While rigorously footnoted and told with an emphasis on fact, the story is also beautifully and engagingly crafted by Claire Bellerjeau and co-Author Tiffany Yecke-Brooks, who also helped author "George Washington's Secret Six: The Spy Ring That Saved the American Revolution" At a time when controversy over CRT (Critical Race Theory) and the 1619 project fuel political divisions over the teaching of American History, this remarkably complete view of the times before, during, and after the Revolution shows that the story of America's founding cannot accurately be told from only one political perspective. This book shows how the work of abolition was already well under way by many founding fathers and patriots at the time of the Revolution, and also that enslaved Americans were inextricably part of the founding. It offers the candidacy of Liss as a new founding mother who can stand in for a large part of the American population who struggled for agency at a time when the system offered them none, and still they participated in the birth of our nation, often working hand in hand with our 'traditional' patriots.
