This is my storyI grew up in rural South Africa's Eastern Transvaal (south-east portion of the Limpopo Province, as it is now known). During the 1970s, at the height of Apartheid South Africa, I arrived in the city from my rural home. I still found no reference of business culture there to indicate I would potentially be spending the rest of my life doing business. Apartheid made it even more impossible for Black entrepreneurs to look beyond selling mealie-meal, sugar, milk, meat, fish and chips, etc. in designated municipality-owned local shops in the Black townships. Manufacturing businesses were overtly discouraged to the extend that one Mr Shikwane, whose Habakuk Cane Furniture business manufactured cane furniture at Hammanskraal near Pretoria, had to relocate his business far away from his market to the then Lebowa Homeland, another rural reserve exclusively for Blacks. When I had job-hopped many times, no one wanted to employ me. I then had to employ myself. In 1981 I had completed my on-the-job studies, passed exams and was registered as a Medical Laboratory Technologist. Seeing no career prospects in this field, I took up hairdressing and in two years I had such skill I could work professionally on Afro, Caucasian and Oriental types of hair. My salon Dr Fingertips Beauty & Health which I established in Mofolo Central, Soweto, exploded into a regional powerhouse where the who-is-who became patrons. I took business training at Damelin Management School to enhance my skill.I also became a partner in Principal Products, where I did hands-on production management of Afro hair-care products. I then also started Restore Plus Afro-hair-care products, which I later sold to Carson Products who then sold it to L'Oreal. In all transactions the SARS felt I did not kick back enough to them and after many years of back and forth I applied for voluntary sequestration. I was rehabilitated after six years, a process that makes you feel like a former alcoholic. I adopted the “Goalistic Thinking” Philosophy (since the late-1980s. Both my personal as well as business lives are guided by this philosophy. In practice this helps one to focus all energies on satisfying customers and equally valuing personal relationships at all times. For your business that also means surrounding yourself with a skilled team that is professional and has a culture to do things first time, every time in order to make and keep the customer happy. This makes it possible to grow the business and to also have a positive and empathic effect on the community that you serve.I teach the mind-map to help you and your business achieve this on a sustainable basis. I call it “Streetwise Business” and you can learn this at your own pace in my 70 videos, which total about 6 hours. Anyone who can master this philosophy as taught, can easily shave off 3,000 hours or 3 years off the learning curve. Remember convention says true mastery of a skill takes about 10,000 hours equivalent to 10 years.
