Sophie Martin is a contemporary artist currently based in Yorkshire. Martin’s practice focuses around an autobiographicalexploration of self, aiming to unveil an inner world typically unseen orunheard in day-to-day life. In a merging of both painting and photography througha series of double exposures, contradictions between the physical and thecognitive - presence and absence - may be visualised. There is a particularemphasis on pathetic fallacy which is achieved through water-based imagery andthe adoption of a muted colour palette. This becomes layered with incompletefigurative paintings which are printed onto, and worked into through a varietyof delicate and easily manipulated materials. Such materials offer avulnerability and a sense of humanness in their fragile and skin-like quality; this alongside an overloading of imagery washes away remnants of thefigure.
