I have been off for five days and well the news has been flooded with allegations of harassment by one of Hollywood’s most famous producers, Harvey Weinstein. In these cases, there have been numerous reports of sexual harassment that actresses endured at some point in their careers in working with Weinstein. Due to all the information coming out. I had to stop and ask myself these questions: what is harassment, why do we keep silent and when do we take a stand?Harassment is defined by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission as unwelcome conduct that is based on race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information. Harassment becomes unlawful where 1) enduring the offensive conduct becomes a condition of continued employment, or 2) the conduct is severe or pervasive enough to create a work environment that a reasonable person would consider intimidating, hostile, or abusive (U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission , 2017). Now that I have defined what harassment is in the workplace. How many of you have been harassed? Yes, I see you and me as well. A shame that so many women and men have been faced with such obstacles at the workplace. A place where we spend 40 hours if not more going to-day in and day out.Why do we keep silent? For me, I did not keep silent and I knew that was the death of my career with this employer. I knew that from that point, I was going to have to look for another job. I look back now thinking, why did I have to leave? I did not do anything and yet I left. I should have been protected by Human Resources and those in charge to make a difference in that workplace. Especially, when I was not alone. In the case of Harvey Weinstein, how many women are coming out saying it happened to me? So many that I am losing count. Hence, why I think it is the opposite in terms of silence. I believe there are many who speak out and I believe there are many who silence those who speak out.  These individuals or groups of individuals will sometimes take a settlement. In most cases, the settlement has a clause that states the individuals or groups of individuals are not allowed to speak to anyone with regards to the case and/or settlement. Oh no! he or she settled or they settled, which to many means that you agreed with the harassment in some way. No one ever thinks that attorney and court fees add up the longer you are in court. And the average person does not have enough money to keep up the fight. Therefore, they must settle.  Hence, the silence of so many. Many cannot afford and/or endure the fight. There are so many things to consider when to speak or not speak up. However, I always think of it this way. If someone harassed your mother or your father or worse your child at work, what would you do to the person who was the harasser? Exactly! Do not say it out loud. I do not want anyone incarcerated because of my blog. The words and the feeling you just said or felt become stronger than any outcome you could face is when you should speak up. There are many that will remain silent and that is their choice. However, sometimes it just takes one to speak up and then there will be many to join in. In the end, you must do what is best for you and no one else. Remember, you are not alone. Someone is either going through the same issue now or has gone through the same issue in the past. The only way you will know is if you speak out.ReferencesU.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission . (2017, October 11). Harassment.
