Whether you arrive in St George’s by boat, car, bus, taxi, ferry or on a rented moped, ditch the transportation and head off on foot. It’s the best way to see this quaint historic town. Incorporates not only its own history, but also Bermuda’s history. The preserved forts and town quite rightly gained recognition from UNESCO granted World Heritage status in 2000 . Follow the footprints of the first shipwrecked settlers, en route to Virginia in 1609, when a hurricane drove them ashore near what would become St George’s. As you stroll the narrow winding lanes and streets, it’s easy to visualize the early years when the Town was the ‘capital’ of the island, already known as Bermuda. The Square is the hub of the Town known variously as Town Square, Market Square and King’s Square – take your pick!Stand on The Square and look across to the statue of Admiral, Sir George Somers, he is immortalized in bronze. His cloak is billowing from the storm winds that blew him and his stout ship, Sea Venture onto the shoals off St. George’s some 400 years ago.
