2020 is upon us and I'm making it my year of wellness. I'm going to fight aging by building some lifelong habits that get me to my reasonably most healthy self. This may or may not have to do with an impending mid-life crisis and my children getting increasingly faster and thus harder to catch. Enough about my motivating neurosis, the first thing I'm doing 2020 to jumpstart my healthy habits is buying new sunglasses to wear whenever I am outside in daylight, like a vampire hiding my eyes from the sun. (Clearly, I'm from the Twilight era version of vampires here.) And since I am a budding Essentialist/Minimalist, I am reducing down to only one pair. What to Do with Old SunglassesCurrently, my sunglasses are scratched. I'll be sending them to the Lion's Club who runs a sunglasses recycling program where glasses are regraded and distributed to those in need at no cost to them in a program called Recycle 4 Sight. Click here to find your local donation location. If you are near me in the Cerritos, California area, the closest location is in Santa Ana, CA. You can also ship to them using this shipping label which appears to be the warehouse for the program. Recycle Bank has a few other suggestions on how to recycle sunglasses as well. You can also look at getting the lenses replaced to extend the life of your glasses if you are loving the frames you already have with The Sunglass Fix.Buying New SunglassesI am sadly intermittent in my sunglasses wearing. I know they should be on EVERY time I go outside because the eyes are particularly susceptible to sun damage. American Cancer Society suggests wearing sunglasses that block out 99-100% of UV rays to prevent melanoma and eye cancer (and a world of other eye diseases that you should definitely not WebMD), in a large enough shape to fully cover the eyes. (Did you read that new tiny sunglasses eye trend?)In sunnies, I'm looking for 100% UV protection (UV400 or more rating), sustainable and potentially locally made, ideally with a lifetime warranty, in a style I can wear year round and is wide enough for my big head. (This is a real problem for me in glasses.) A company that also offers kids glasses is a bonus as well then I can be twinning with the boys. Here are a few links to people who have already done some great roundups on eco friendly sunglasses. Uniguide, EcoWarriorPrincess, The Good Trade, Citizen Sustainable. Here are my picks from Amazon for those of us who can't necessarily get to a great eyeglass shop. I tried to find highly rated, durable frames from small companies distributing on Amazon. Mostly, in the eco friendly sunglasses area, glasses are made from wood, bamboo or recycled materials. Biosunnies. Biosunnies is a line from Wildwood Eyewear out of Canada that uses biodegradable wheat straw, donates 1% of gross sales to environmental non-profits and has a one year warranty on their products. They carry a kid's line too. Click here for the adult line or click here for the kid's line. Sunski Madrona. Sunski's sustainability practices include using locally sourced recycled plastic in their SuperLight Frames, no plastic packaging, a lifetime warranty, 1% donated to environmental causes and certified carbon neutral. Click here to buy on Amazon.Wildwood Eyewear Summer. The same company that makes Biosunnies also has a wooden line using sustainably sourced wood in kid's and adult sizes. This 50/50 style is a great look. Click here for the adult line or click here for the kid's line. Labante London Scarlett. Labante is an accessories company based out of the UK, uses recycled materials and has a zero waste packaging system. They donate 10% of their profits to charitable causes and are certified vegan. Click here to buy on Amazon. Norton Point Whitecap. Norton Point makes sunglasses from ocean plastic and plant based materials. They invest 5% of net profits into stemming the impact of ocean plastic and vow to clean up one pound of ocean plastic for every product sold. Click here to buy on Amazon. Wise Owl Eco Goods Ebony Wood. Wise Owl Eco Goods uses renewable materials and focuses on providing non plastic alternatives to everyday goods. They donate 10% of proceeds to the National Resource Defense Council. Click here to buy on Amazon. If you do opt to buy on Amazon, did you know you can call and request they use minimal packaging or plastic free packaging? You can also selection frustration free packaging when buying an item that will also reduce the amount of packaging sent. Lastly, you can group your Amazon packages to be delivered on a single day instead of in multiple packages over the course of a week. amzn_assoc_placement = adunit0;amzn_assoc_tracking_id = swellmommyblog-20;amzn_assoc_ad_mode = search;amzn_assoc_ad_type = smart;amzn_assoc_marketplace = amazon;amzn_assoc_region = US;amzn_assoc_default_search_phrase = eco friendly sunglasses;amzn_assoc_default_category = All;amzn_assoc_linkid = 156225133f04cec2380fb2a68867f961;amzn_assoc_design = in_content;amzn_assoc_title = Eco Friendly Sunglasses;Do you love your sunglasses?
