Here’s how THOMI AFRICA has been making a difference recently…Promoting Quality EducationWe consider education as a human right and a key factor in reducing poverty and improve the sustainability of the affected population.CURRENTLY:Our education program activities include the following:Provision of school operational costsTargeted capacity development courses for teachers, school staff, and education authoritiesIntegrated structured recreational and Psychosocial activities for in-and out-of-school school children and integrated referrals to service providersOutreach and awareness events to increase enrolment, attendance, and community engagement in education, i.e. remedial classes for in-school children and catch-up classes for out-of-school children and PSS and parenting workshops for parents on supporting children’s education and well-beingPromoting Decent Work and Sustainable Livelihoods for WomenAt THOMI AFRICA, we strive to promote livelihoods and self-reliance It is estimated that out of the 736 million people living in extreme poverty worldwide, about 80 percent live in rural areas and depend on agriculture for survival.It is unacceptable – and unsustainable – that the people who grow and harvest much of the world’s food do not get paid enough to make a decent livingTackling segregation and concentrated povertyMore than half the world lives on less than $2 a dayThe most affected are low-income children, isolated, & excluded poor communities. CURRENTLY: THOMI AFRICA is mentoring young girls who are in danger of going into prostitution.The girls have group and one-on-one mentoring, financial support and academic support so they stay in education and work for a more positive future. They are part of a social enterprise scheme, which produces and sells candles, cards and key rings.Shelter for homelessWhilst our work focused on prevention with girls we found that working with young men was having a positive effect on the problem. It was keeping them in education, getting them into employment and therefore away from the idea of trafficking girls into Western Europe. It started with a five-a-side football team in a local league, alongside which the men worked doing small amounts of DIY at the charity.CURRENTLY:We mentor young men, providing them with the incentive to stay in education and to find jobs after education, so as to not get involved in the trafficking industry. Our mandate is to ensure decent accommodation for childrenA mother struggling to feed her child is willing to take risks in an attempt to meet her child’s needs, even if it might mean sending her own child away with another family member or friend. The promise of freedom from hunger often results in a trafficking situation. Breaking the cycle of poverty eliminates the risks that can lead to trafficking. Organizations and employers that seek to provide stable economic solutions for any struggling community lower the risk of exploitation for that community. Job development, entrepreneurial training programs, micro loans, and job skills-training are strategic investments in prevention. Prevention of Child Trafficking Traffickers often lure their victims by offering job opportunities or promising education in a bigger city, or even another country, that never comes to passCURRENTLY:We are running awareness campaigns over social media to educate the public about the realities and risks of human trafficking. We also run unique training tailored to specific audiences. We believe that training campaigns go a long way in bringing an understanding of the issue of human trafficking.
