WychwoodWe're a duo (Chrissy Steinbock & Tim Kitz) who identify only half-jokingly as “the world’s first blackgrass band.” We both sing & play guitar or banjo, while mixing in accordion, bass, saw, dobro, harmonica, glockenspiel, etc. Some days we’re acoustic purists. Some days we like to corrupt traditional folksongs with bits of black metal, ambient, & noise, trying to make folk music dangerous again.Blackgrass Harvest, released 20 November 20221. Blackest Crow (acoustic version)2. St. James Infirmary Blues (acoustic)3. Bury me beneath the willow (acoustic)4. The water is wide (half-acoustic)5. Blackest Crow (extended noise version)6. St James Infimary (extended noise version)7. Which side are you on (black noise remix)8. Death & the Lady (Witchwire version)9. Bury me beneath the willow (extended noise version)Blackgrass Harvest is an album of mostly dark traditional folk songs played mostly acoustically, but blending in some black metal, ambient, shoegaze, drone and noise music, audio collage, and other experiments. It was recorded in Tim's bedroom between the 2nd and 7th wave of the pandemic, with occasional bits recycled from earlier material. The seed for the album was an experiment in trying to learn to record, which quickly sprouted into an attempt at also realizing the original idea for blackgrass (black metal + bluegrass) by incorporating distortion into acoustic recordings of traditional folksongs. As part of the experimentation, each song with a "noise version" used a different instrument and method of generating distortion – and, as the project grew, a different instrument and method for any ambient or psychedelic sounds. This album, then, presents the results of these experiments – our blackgrass harvest.
