Finale: vivace ma non troppoYonatan Gat’s American Quartet is a slash-and-burn reimagining of Antonin Dvořák’s legendary string quartet, one of the defining works of the chamber music canon, written while Dvořák was – like Gat – an immigrant living in New York City.While Gat is not classically trained and does not read sheet music, learning the piece by ear freed his playing from a strict interpretation of the score, allowing for the wild and unpredictable performance captured on this recording. The drums by Greg Saunier (of Deerhoof) loosely interpret the cello parts, while providing a breathtakingly expressive rhythmic interpretation to the piece, while Mikey Coltun and Curt Sydnor each bring their unique sensibilities transcribing the viola, cello and second violin parts to organ and bass. Sydnor with the nuanced playing of a classical musician, and Coltun with versatility and hard edge from years as the producer and touring bassist of Mdou Moctar.American Quartet will be issued on Gat’s Stone Tapes label, which also releases records by trailblazing experimental powwow group Medicine Singers, Israeli punk legends Monotonix, Moroccan gnawa master Maalem Hassan Ben Jafaar, Guinean guitar pioneer Mamady Kouyate, and Gat’s acclaimed solo work. These artists are highlighted on the limited edition 2022 Stone Tapes 5-LP box set, available through Joyful Noise Records and Bandcamp.
