I have no specific project to develop in this area, since my residency location was changed a few weeks before I came. Radek (my local accomplice) first takes me out to tour more and less locally famous abandoned sites and factories. It is winter. In these places, it’s quite rare to hear even a drop of water. It is such a cold winter and everything feels frozen. For no particular reason, I begin focusing on all the chimneys rising above the horizon. There are so many. In a direct manner, they say a lot about how industrial this area must have been. Radek tells me that only very few chimneys are left today. The landscape used to be full of these bold lines. But also, I must confess: though they haven’t so much in common, they remind me of the fact that I will from on now live about 40 km from Oświęcim (Auschwitz). Also I realize that chimneys reach much higher altitudes than churches. Industry, our new hopeless religion. Oh, but it is so obvious. As Radek seems to have a lot of experiences with these places, I ask him if he knows of a chimney we could climb. I’d like to hear how it sounds from up there. How it is when you are standing at the tip of this peak, with nothing hiding you from the sound coming all around. What remains when standing so far? Do we hear voices, animals, cell-phones ringing, only cars, planes, industrial activity, wind? What kind of rhythm do these sounds have, how do they get interwoven? Somehow, I’d like to hear how it sounds from the sky, and if any signs of silence would occur. I’ll begin at the top of a chimney. A few days after, we make it. We leave in the morning, wearing helmets to look like professionals, and start climbing. It’s just a ladder to climb, but a sixty-meter one. It’s exhausting. I realize I never use my arms and hands in this way. Once motionless, the warm body gets cold quickly. It’s -10 °C. Radek and his friend smoke a cigarette. I take some instant pictures, but it’s too cold for them to develop normally. Most of all, no picture seems to convey this weird sensation of standing high above ground, at the end of a thin stick, with only void around. They finish the cigarette and then leave while I start setting up the recording system. Once they’re down, inside the car, I start recording. I’m fascinated by what I hear through the headphones. Nothing spectacular, only pure and constant noise with some distant signs of human activity. But such an active noise. I get lost in it, and I can imagine or hear anything through this chaos. After this first experience, climbing chimneys for recording became a permanent goal. We spent days looking for those vertical lines in the landscape. First I thought that we would manage finding partners such as companies that would let us climb theirs, so Radek contacted many of them, wrote or called and called again. If we had any answers at all they were negative. Actually only one company (Tauron) was enthusiastic about the project, and agreed to let us reach the top of their highest chimney in the region; ”300 meters high” they told us proudly. After checking later, it was only 200. That was crazy anyway. This one had an elevator inside. No need to climb for a half an hour, it took us 5 minutes to the top. Once again, the recording was great. But after 20 minutes, it wasn’t only the strong and cold wind that brought me to stop: I started feeling and even tasting that breathing this weird white smoke coming out of the two huge pipes was not a very good idea. It was probably for very specific reasons that women and men planned such constructions for exhausting smoke far away from the ground where people live. Anyway, this experience left me full of hope concerning collaborations with companies. It turned out that this situation was an exception in the region and we found no other chimney with an elevator. Also, not a single company would take the risk to let us climb any ladder, as we were no professionals. Some told us that we just needed a working at heights certificate, which could easily be obtained through medical tests. So we did it, and discovered on the way that heights start at 3 meters. Anyway it didn’t help. Definitely no one would take the risk. Simultaneously, we started actively researching. I was pointing to places which looked interesting on satellite views, and then we drove there to check. Interesting meant abandoned places without permanent security, and a quite high chimney with metal stairs that wouldn’t have already been stolen by scrap pickers. So we bought ropes and climbing material, met at 4 o’clock in the morning or late at night to be discreet, and went climbing these edifices. Some locations had security, but we softly began to feel comfortable with the idea of bypassing guards, climbing walls or outsmarting presence detectors. Even abandoned, some chimneys were highly secured fortresses, as they are really interesting to telecommunication companies that do not want to build a tower to hang their emitters. Actually, our penultimate expedition ended up in a police car, but with no serious outcome. It is probably a good thing this experience didn’t last much longer than one and a half month, as we were more and more fearless. On this cd you can hear some uncut excerpts from each of the 11 recordings I did at the top of these chimneys. The sessions lasted between 10 to 46 minutes, depending on my ability to stand motionless at sometimes quite low temperatures (-10 °C to 10 °C), in permanent (more and less) windy situations because the height (45 to 200 meters) means absolutely no obstacle around. I thank Radek who accompanied me, and most of all, who kept as motionless as me during the recordings, without knowing when it was going to end./ / / / / / / / / / Od stycznia do końca marca będę mieszkał w Kronice w Bytomiu. No cóż, ale to przecież takie oczywiste. No Credit Card required. |
