Shopify Theme Detector

Paste a store address and see which Shopify theme it runs. Free, no sign-up.

Want to find out what Shopify theme a store is using? Paste the store address above. A Shopify storefront names its own theme in the page it serves to every shopper, so the answer needs nothing more than one ordinary page request.

Unlike most platforms, Shopify also tells you whether the theme came from the Theme Store or was built custom — it publishes a Theme Store ID, and that ID is the only dependable signal. If a store publishes none, we say “custom or renamed” rather than guessing from a name, because merchants rename stock themes constantly.

This is the quickest way to check whether a look you admire is buyable off the shelf. If it is a Theme Store theme you can go and install it; if it is custom, you now know the shape of the job instead of assuming.

What people do with the answer

  • Merchants find out whether a look you admire is buyable off the shelf.
  • Developers see what you would inherit before quoting on the work.
  • Agencies size a market by what the stores in it actually run.
  • Theme authors see where your theme has been deployed and renamed.

What a Shopify theme is, and why anyone checks

A Shopify theme is the template that decides how a store looks and behaves — layout, navigation, product pages, checkout styling. Some come from the Shopify Theme Store, free ones like Dawn or paid ones like Prestige. Others are built from scratch, or forked from a stock theme and changed beyond recognition.

People check for three reasons, and they want different answers. A merchant sees a store they admire and wants to know whether that look is buyable off the shelf. A developer is quoting for work and needs to know what they would inherit. An agency is sizing a market and wants to know what the stores in it are actually running.

The first two questions turn on one field: whether the store published a Theme Store ID. That is the only dependable signal, and the tool reports it plainly instead of guessing from the name.

What the detector reports

  • Theme name — as the merchant themselves labelled it
  • Theme Store or custom — from the published ID, never inferred
  • Built from — the developer’s name for it, which often reveals the stock theme a custom build started life as
  • Built from — the developer’s own label for it

A store we cannot read returns “could not check”, never “no theme”. A failure to measure is not a finding.

The most-used Shopify themes

Measured across 1.2 million live Shopify stores. We hold a theme for 1,177,127 of them — 94.7%.

The long tail is the real story. Those twelve themes are the recognisable names, but the dataset holds 456,359 distinct theme strings across 1,177,127 stores. Most Shopify stores are not running a theme you could name.

What this table leaves out, so you know it is filtered. The raw ranking mixes Theme Store themes with merchant-renamed copies and internal labels. Those are excluded above — Updated copy of Dawn (14,879), launchpad-star (8,039), Updated copy of Updated copy of Updated co… (6,702), launchpad (4,493), Main (3,618), Updated copy of Updated copy of Dawn (3,161), Debut with Installments message (3,031). Case variants are merged, so Debut counts both spellings. Measured 16 August 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Shopify theme detector work?

A Shopify storefront declares its own theme in the page it serves every visitor — a small block of JavaScript naming the theme, its version, and whether it came from the Shopify Theme Store. The detector reads that public page once. No login, no account access, nothing that is not already sent to anyone who opens the store.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign-up, no credit card, no email required.

Why does it say “custom or renamed” instead of naming a Theme Store theme?

Because the store published no Theme Store ID, which is the only reliable signal that a theme came from the Theme Store. The name alone cannot settle it: merchants rename Theme Store themes freely, and custom themes are usually named after the stock theme they were forked from. Reporting “custom” from a name we did not recognise would be a guess dressed as a finding.

Why does the theme name look like an internal label rather than a theme?

That is genuinely what the store published. Merchants name their own theme copies, so real stores run themes called things like “Updated copy of Dawn” — 14,851 of them in our data. We show the merchant’s own label rather than tidying it into something that would disagree with what the store actually says.

Does it work for a store you have never crawled?

Yes — any Shopify store, whether or not we have seen it before. Paste the address and you get an answer.

Why does a store show no theme name at all?

Headless storefronts and some heavily customised builds strip that block from the page. The store still has a theme; it simply does not publish which. We say so rather than reporting “none”.

Can I see which apps the store runs too?

Yes — the Shopify App Detector answers that from the same public page, and reports the theme alongside the apps.
